As a new parent, you’re likely to experience a range of emotions, from excitement and joy to anxiety and stress.
One common concern that parents often have is whether their newborn is gaining enough weight. It’s important to know that it’s completely normal for babies to lose weight in the first few days after birth, but what should you do if your baby is struggling to put back on that weight?
First and foremost, try to relax as much as possible. It may be easier said than done, but stress and anxiety can affect milk production, especially if you’re breastfeeding. The more relaxed you are, the more likely breastfeeding will go well. Of course, being a new parent comes with some level of stress, but do what you can to slip into a more relaxed state.
Next, examine what’s going on with breastfeeding, especially if you’re breastfeeding your baby. Make sure your baby is latching on correctly and getting enough milk.
You can see a lactation consultant or have your pediatrician take a look at the latch during an office visit. If your baby isn’t latching properly, they won’t get enough milk, which can lead to weight loss.
Finally, keep your doctor’s appointments. Your newborn is still very young, and weight gain or loss can become significant quickly. Your pediatrician or healthcare provider can monitor your baby’s weight and make sure they are gaining weight appropriately. Your newborn is allowed to lose up to 10% of their weight before there’s cause for concern, but it’s important to keep a handle on things.
If you’re worried about your baby’s weight loss, it’s essential to be aware of the signs that indicate a significant issue. These include fever, vomiting, lethargy, and refusing to feed. If you notice any of these signs, bring them to your pediatrician’s attention immediately.
