Your Baby’s Spit Up

If you’re a new parent, you might be concerned about your baby spitting up and wondering if it’s a cause for concern.

In this blog post, we’ll discuss when spitting up becomes an issue and what you can do to help your baby.

Spitting up, also known as reflux, is a common occurrence in newborns. Studies have shown that up to 50% of newborns will spit up, especially by three months of age.

Spitting up is when a baby brings up milk from their stomach into their esophagus or mouth. In many cases, it may not necessarily mean there’s anything wrong.

However, there are times when spitting up becomes a problem. This happens when milk and stomach acid are both brought up, leading to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

GERD is a disease process where there’s inflammation of the esophagus and other complications. If your baby is uncomfortable and crying all the time when spitting up, arching their back, not putting on weight, or experiencing projectile vomiting after every feed, you should seek medical attention right away.

Some things you can do to help with reflux include keeping your baby upright or at a 45-degree angle for about 30 minutes after feeding. You can also burp your baby frequently to reduce reflux in some cases. Additionally, your pediatrician can help determine if your baby will benefit from a special formula or acid-reducing medication.

Breastfeeding can also help, but it can be challenging. You can try eliminating dairy from your diet to see if it helps. If you have concerns about your baby’s reflux, seek medical attention.

It’s essential to note that you should still lay your baby on their back to sleep, even if they have reflux. It’s safer for them to lie on their back because it has a way of coming out without going back into the windpipe.
